Here are instructions on getting to Berkeley Lab by car or by the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) train. BART is a convenient, inexpensive way to get to the LBNL shuttle-bus stop downtown, and to the Hotel Shattuck Plaza (popular with LBNL visitors), from either of the area’s major airports: SFO and OAK. Consider whether it, or an airport shuttle, might serve your needs as an alternative to a rental car.

More Resources for BELLA Center Visitors and Affiliates

Berkeley Lab site access is informed by the state of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Site access has to be prearranged. In general, the employee who is hosting you, or one of our administrators, will make arrangements and provide you with detailed information.

If you are staying for less than a week or so, and are here for meetings, interviews, or other things that do not involve hands-on technical work, you will probably get visitor status. You will be sent a site-access pass entitling you to park onsite or to board the shuttle bus. Bring it and government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport each day.

If you will be working with us in the longer term, or in a laboratory, you would usually get affiliate status. It implies some requirements for safety training. Affiliates receive a badge. The host or administrator will determine and communicate the requirements.

Other helpful items include site maps and the Berkeley Lab Guest House website.

Weather

Although weather here in the East Bay tends to be both warmer and less capricious than that of San Francisco, locals master the art of “layering” and take the forecast to be merely the centroid of a seasonal parameter space.
